Description: Decameron Hotels is looking for a Health and Safety Officer for it's newest hotel in Esmeraldas, Ecuador, due to open end of 2009. Decameron is a successful chain of "all inclusice" hotels accross the Caribbean, Latin America and Africa and our newest hotel has been hailed as one of the most important developments in tourism by the Ecuadorian government.

An important part of our success is the professionalism of our "health and safety program" which overseas a structured control of potential risks and hazards at each of our hotels.
The heath and safety department is overseen by a corporate manager who helps train and advise each of the 22 hotel heath and safety officers / supervisor. The hotel health and safety supervisor for Esmeraldas, Ecuador will be in charge of keeping records and checking all areas and "points of risk" on a daily basis as well as educating and advising staff on the best practices to maintain and heathly and safe environment ofr our guests and staff.

Controls are made in the form of "checks" which involve simple audits of kitchens and public areas on a daily basis. Records are taken of cooking temperatures, freezer temperatures, pool chlorine levels, signage routes etc. You will also be responsible of training and informing staff of health and safety practices such as using face masks in the kitchen, the importance of washing hands, cutting boards etc. Each of these checks and training sessions are logged so as to keep a record for our corporate office and prepare staff for extrenal sfaety checks.

The location of the hotel is breathtaking on a fantastic streach of Pacific beach and up to now, completely undeveloped. Accommodation and food will be provided by the hotel and you will have the chance to be part of a new and exciting team with coleagues from the UK, Argentina, Mexico, Cuba, Colombia, Jamaica, Ecuadaor and many other nationalities in this truly international project.
The charming town of Esmeraldas is a short drive away and Quito is withing driving distance also. Decameron hotels make a point of providing opportunities to travel and take opportunities in various destinations to all of their staff and the health and safety program is unique in this opportunity as each qualified staff member of the team can switch and travel between each and every hotel destination.

Qualifications: Successful applicants for the Health and Safety possition would ideally have a clear understanding of HACCP (Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points) or FCCO (UK tour operator standards) standards and applications - These are the norms used in all restaurants and hotels across the globe and recognized by all international tour operators as the standards by which the tourism industry can control risks and avoid contaminations or accidents. The most important areas of risk in any hotel are in the kitchens (restaurants); swimming pools and beach and fire exits.

Our aim is to maintain a healthy and risk free operation so as to keep guests safe and avoid any accidents and thus avoid any complaints. A degree in tourism or hotel & catering would be useful but not obligatory. Also a degree in chemistry, biology or industrial sciences would also help but is also not necesary. The application of "health and safety" in the hotel industry is relatively new and undefined in the academic world and thus this position is open to all capable graduates with the desire to work in a dynamic environment alongside other young professionals willing to learn and apply their knowledge and learning in order to make an important difference to the vacations fo our North American and European visitors.

An understanding and interest in tourism would be extremely beneficial as well as an interest in the application of health and safety standards in a touristic field would be highly desirable.

Spanish and English our our business languanges:

Fluency in English and the ability to write reports clearly is essential as many safety inspections will be conducted by US, Canadian and UK holiday operators.
Fluency in Spanish is also required as most hotel staff (kitchen, cleaning) may only speak Spanish and the hotel chain is Latin American owned. Note: Spanish does not necesarily have to be 100% as correspondence with management may be done in English, also in some locations such as Jamaica Spnish is not used.
French & English fluency is required only for the hotels in Morocco (no spanish necesary).

Tour operator representatives with experience in European or North American companies will also be considered for this position.

Full training for this position will be given by our corporate manager.
