The School of St. Jude - Arusha, Tanzania Teacher Librarian Position Statement of Duties: 1. Management of the School of St Jude, School Library and Library staff, and to provide information and library service to the School community. 2. Liaison with staff in providing a dynamic and innovative Library. 3. Provision of lessons for students as appropriate 4. To lead and manage the Library staff. 5. To initiate and develop the use of the Library, fostering a positive and caring environment for students. 6. To engage in activities which improve the literacy levels, research skills and positive attitude toward library usage to staff and students . 7. To oversee the allocation and cataloguing of library and teacher resources received and purchased by the school (including all textbooks!)

We are always looking for Teacher-librarians to help at our growing schools. If you are interested in coming over for at least a year (compulsory for consideration) then you need to have the following qualities: - You will possess a love for working with children as well as a willingness to help a fast growing school that is educating the poorest children in Tanzania. - You will need to be patient and tolerant as you will be living and working at the school with other volunteer staff from various cultures and with a variety of personalities. There is dust, dirt and disease everywhere, so it can be very challenging to live here. Hence, you will need to be able to cope with these conditions in a cheerful way....day in and day out. Working here offers huge personal rewards as the school itself is challenging the children of Tanzania to be well educated and thus improve the future for them and their families. This is an opportunity to be a part of that. Benefits Successful applicants will be paid a small stipend which is enough to live on but not enough to travel around Africa on. It will also be the experience of a life time.
Qualifications:
Selection Criteria Essential 1. Have recent successful experience in teacher/librarianship. 2. Have a collaborative leadership style that involves and inspires staff. 3. Have empathy with and an understanding of children in a Developing World School in Tanzania 4. Ability to be a co-operative team member in a multi-facetted organization 5 Experience in use with the Dewey Decimal system. Desirable 1. Possess a recognized degree (or its equivalent) in Teaching and Librarianship, preferably in School or Children's Librarianship 2. Be conversant with Information Communication Technology and in particular the Automated Library System Softlink Alice for Windows and/or Oliver or other similar system.
