Duration of stay

Au pairs are included in the host family for the duration of 10 to 12 months mostly. In some cases the stay even can be shorter. For au pairs coming from non EU-/ EWR states (with the exception of Switzerland) or from the EU-member states Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia, Czechia and Hungary, the au pair contract must, however, be entered for at least 6 months. A renewed employment as an au pair is not possible even if the maximum duration of one year was not exhausted.

The tasks of an Au Pair

The daily tasks of an au pair are very different. They completely depend on the peculiarity and the lifestyle of the family, who has admitted the au pair at themselves. Generally au-pair duties include the following:
- light work at home, for example cleaning, hoovering, washing or ironing
- making breakfast and preparing light meals
- looking after young children (going for a walk with them, playing with them, getting them to the kindergarten, to school, to friends...)
- looking after the house/flat and caring for pets

Holidays

If the au pair is employed in a host family for a whole year, a paid holiday of 4 weeks duration is entitled to him or her, otherwise for every whole month 2 working days holiday. If the family members go on vacation, they frequently take the au pair with, however also certain tasks and obligations are to be taken on by the au pair (support of the children etc.). However, a family vacation only then counts as holiday, when merely insignificant tasks are to be taken on and there is not an obligation to attend. If the au pair does not go along with the family, an employment at another family (neighbors, acquaintances etc.) is not permitted.

Lodging and board

Lodging and board are provided by the family free of charge of course. In principle, a room of one's own is at the au pair's disposal within the family apartment. The au pair takes part at the common meals together and receives the same meal as all family members. If a certain diet form is wished, the au pair should indicate this in his or her application.

Language courses

The possibility has to be given to every au pair, to take part at German language courses in the leisure time as well as to visit cultural and intellectually stimulating events. The au pair has, however, to pay for the costs him- or herself.

Pocket-money and travelling expenses

The expansion of linguistic proficiency and the general knowledge by a better knowledge of the host country is in the foreground of an au pair relationship. An au pair therefore gets no wage in the usual meaning but merely so-called pocket-money. It amounts at the moment to 260.00 ¬ in the month, independent of the duration of the house working time. As a rule, for the journey and return journey the au pair carries the expenses.

Health- and accident insurance, pregnancy

In any case an au pair has to be assured in case of illness, accident and pregnancy for the whole stay in Germany. All insurance contributions are supported by the host family.
