Length of Position: Permanent, fulltime

Description: Working conditions are often noisy and dirty. Heavy equipment automotive engineers may be exposed to paint and chemical fumes, and other hazards. Working conditions may also be stressful when working to tight deadlines.

Some travel may be required to repair machinery on-site with a specially-equipped service vehicle, as it can be expensive to transport large machinery.

Skills & Knowledge
Heavy equipment automotive engineers need to have:

* knowledge of vehicle engines and parts
* knowledge of vehicle electronics
* knowledge of Land Transport Safety Authority regulations and safety standards
* mechanical skills including the ability to diagnose mechanical problems people and communication skills
* computer skills.

Highlights: Plenty of work and competitive rates for experienced hard working professionals.

There is a shortage of heavy equipment automotive engineers, partly because of the insufficient number of training courses and small number of employers employing apprentices in the past.

Modern diesel vehicle engines are more sophisticated and contain more electronic components than many older models. This means heavy equipment automotive engineers need to have a wider range of skills than previously, including knowledge of how electronic parts work and how to repair them. Due to this increase in sophistication and need for a wider range of skills, many heavy equipment automotive engineers now specialise and work on particular vehicles.

High level of computer knowledge required

Coupled with this, a high level of computer knowledge is needed due to the increase in the number of vehicles that have on-board computers and the growing use of computerised fault-finding equipment to identify what is wrong with an engine. This technology has changed the way heavy equipment automotive engineers work. Some spend a significant proportion of their working day diagnosing faults on a computer rather than working on the engine itself.

Qualifications: Qualified diesel Mechanic, 4-5 + experience
