CIRs are engaged in internationalization activities. Their duties vary greatly depending on their placement, but may include all of just one of the following: Coordinating international events, translating, interpreting, hosting official guests from abroad, assisting with language education of government employees, children or local residents, and assisting in other local activities pertaining to cross-cultural awareness. Highlights:
The JET Program is Japan's most reputable program for English instructors. Sponsored by the Japanese government, the JET Program sends between 1200-1400 young professionals from the US to work in Japan each year as Assistant Language Teachers (ALTs) or Coordinators for International Relations (CIRs). Apply this winter to begin work next summer. JET provides roundtrip transportation to Japan, health insurance, training, paid vacations and more.
Qualifications:
* Bachelor's degree by July 1 in year of departure * Not have lived in Japan for 3 or more years within the last 8 years * Be a citizen of the United States to apply through the Japanese Embassy in Washington, D.C. Citizens of other countries should contact the Embassy of Japan in their own country for more information * In principle, be less than forty (40) years of age as of April 1, in the year of departure * Not have been a former participant of the JET Program in the last 10 years * Have excellent English language skills * Not have declined a position with the JET Program in the last program year after receiving notification of placement Coordinator for International Relations (CIR) applicants must also: * Have a functional command of the Japanese language
