What is an au pair?

An au pair is a caring live-in childcare provider between the ages of 18 and 26 who lives as an extended member of a host family in exchange for room, board and a small stipend. In addition to providing childcare, an au pair's responsibilities may also include:

    * dropping the children off at school
    * picking them up from school or after-school activities
    * helping with homework
    * assisting in keeping the children's rooms clean
    * cooking light meals for the children

While an au pair's first priority is to provide childcare for the host family's children, au pairs have plenty of free time to make the most of their time in the U.S. Au pairs receive a 500 USD credit for taking educational classes at local schools and also participate in monthly meetings and activities planned with other au pairs in their community.
